Resting

Posted on August 25, 2026 by Deborah

I am laid up with a swollen patella. My knee hurts with a dull throb when I’m off it, and when I bend it I feel like wincing. Stairs are pretty rough both ways.

I’ve never considered myself to be a busy person but lately I feel like life is going too fast and I can’t catch my breath.

We aren’t doing school this summer, though I’ve tried on multiple occasions. Our days have filled up with Lego bricks, playing with neighbors, staying up past bedtime – for everyone in the house – and swimming.

“That sounds like a great summer! Why do you sound down?”

Our days are also full of children fighting, complaining, being offended, yelling, slamming doors – some intentional, some not – and ending the day in a furry just so the day stops going. Note: I am included in “children”.

I could blame outer influences like too much sugar, rampant screen time, and the fact that I’ve found mold in my house. Those are all factors, but they’re not the root.

The root that pops up to the surface and weaves in and throughout our days are selfishness, greed, and pride.
