Sunday Scrub

Posted on October 29, 2023August 25, 2026 by Deborah

There’s something about Sunday’s that yearn for a fresh start. Maybe because I don’t want the leftover tasks from last week to follow me into the coming week, but there’s something about Sunday and it being the day to set the tone for the week that makes me want to clean everything.

I love a good sabbath rest day, but the seventh day is on Saturday for a reason: Sunday’s are for preparing for the week.
So many things happen on Sunday that set up the coming week.

Church on Sunday starts the week well! When I don’t go to church, in-person or online, I am my worst self. Some notable terrible weeks were ones where I didn’t go to church on Sunday and made my own selfish decisions throughout the following week (2 such times were putting in notice at my job, and picking a huge fight with Jeff that clouded over us for a year. See? Not my best).

Having a calm house. I don’t know about you (but I can guess!) but I am more anxious in a messy house. Tuesday is usually a high-anxiety day for me where I end up rage cleaning and wanting to take everything to goodwill. Including furniture. It’s not pretty. I’m working on trouble-shooting my Tuesdays because they have developed a pattern.

Meal planning and prep. I order groceries to be delivered on Sunday afternoons. I process my meat and cook what’s left in the fridge into soup or some other meal to use during the week. I also clear out old leftovers because Monday is my trash pickup. The fridge gets a new amount of food, I get some lunches ready for my husband to take to work, and I get to wrap my head around what I actually have to eat during the week. Even though this does not keep my house clean, it is an important part of Sundays

Possible solution: the Sunday scrub!

Set the stage

I think it is common that how you start the week dictates how the rest of the week flows. When Monday has frenetic energy and only reactions, and not responses, the rest of the week is a hard battle to reclaim and re-calm your mind and home.

However, when you start the week with a tidy house and a plan for activities and meals, there isn’t much inside the realm of normal that will throw you off.
